Appointment: Director General, Department of Communities

An environmental scientist with 30 years’ public sector service and a track record of strong leadership and reform experience will be the new head of the State’s human services agency.
Michelle Andrews has been appointed Director General of the Western Australian Department of Communities. She has been acting in the role since February 2019 following the retirement of the previous Director General.
Public Sector Commissioner Sharyn O’Neill said Ms Andrews brings a wealth of experience to the role.
“With her recent accomplishments working on the Service Priority Review, Michelle has a great understanding of what it takes to deliver high quality services to Western Australian communities,” Ms O’Neill said.
“Additionally, she is an extremely experienced public sector officer of more than 30 years. This places her in an ideal position to provide strong leadership to the Department of Communities at a time of change throughout the public sector.”
Ms Andrews recent leadership roles include Deputy Director General Policy and Reform at the Department of the Premier and Cabinet where she set up a new public sector reform unit to support implementation of the Government’s five year public sector reform program.
Ms Andrews has served as Deputy Chair of the Minerals Research Institute of Western Australia. She is also on the board of the Western Australian Biodiversity Science Institute.
She will take up the position of Director General – and also of Chief Executive Officer, Housing Authority; Chief Executive Officer, Country Housing Authority and; Chief Executive Officer, Disability Services Commission – on 1 May 2019 for a five year term.
