Nomination deadlines

Nominations for the Australia Day honours list (26 January) must be received by the Committee Secretariat by close of business on 1 August each year (or the following Monday if this falls on a weekend). Late nominations are not considered.

What happens after nominating?

  • WA Public Service Medal Committee considers nominations twice a year (for the Australia Day and Queen’s Birthday honours lists).
  • Committee recommends recipients to the Premier of Western Australia.
  • Premier of Western Australia makes a recommendation to the Governor-General who has the authority to approve the awards.
  • Honours Secretariat of Government House contacts proposed recipients and arranges for the announcement of the medals to appear in the Commonwealth of Australia Gazette.
  • Proposed recipients may decline the medal when contacted by the Honours Secretariat.
  • After the announcement in the Commonwealth of Australia Gazette, recipients are notified by Government House of arrangements for them to receive their medals at an official investiture.
  • Eligible nominations that are not recommended to the Premier are considered once more in the next round of nominations.

How does a nominator know if a nomination is successful?

Nominators find out the outcomes of nominations when the Australian Honours are announced.

Nominators are asked to keep their nominations confidential until announcements are made.
