Director of Equal Opportunity in Public Employment (DEOPE)

Message from the DEOPE

Rebecca Harris, Director of Equal Opportunity in Public Employment

As the Director of Equal Opportunity of Public Employment (DEOPE) in Western Australia I am in a unique position to drive the diversity and inclusion agenda in Western Australian public authorities. Together with the Public Sector Commissioner and public authorities, my responsibility to improve diversity and inclusion outcomes in public employment comes from Part IX of the Equal Opportunity Act 1984 (EO Act).

There is now strong evidence that the diversity dividend – or pay-off an organisation gets from having a representative workforce – is real. The benefits of having improved performance, productivity and employee engagement cannot be underestimated by public authorities. I am committed to helping leaders and people managers to make the business case for diversity and realise these benefits.

The recent launch of Time for action: Diversity and inclusion in public employment and See my abilities: An employment strategy for people with disability in collaboration with the Public Sector Commissioner will soon be followed by the launch of further strategies. Attract, appoint, advance: An employment strategy for Aboriginal people will be launched in August 2016 and work is underway on the development of strategies for gender equality, intergenerational employment and people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. I am also committed to supporting public authorities to build inclusive workplaces, where people who have diverse sexual orientation and gender identity can feel respected and safe.

I strongly believe public employment is in a position to lead by example and demonstrate what productive, diverse and inclusive workplaces can look like. I look forward to working with public authorities in ensuring equal employment opportunity for all people.

Rebecca Harris
Director of Equal Opportunity in Public Employment
